Heat pumps can be an excellent choice for homes in Kelowna, West Kelowna and the surrounding Okanagan. A properly selected heat pump can provide efficient winter heating and summer air conditioning. The result depends on choosing equipment that suits our climate, sizing it correctly and installing it carefully.


Can a heat pump handle an Okanagan winter?


Yes. Modern cold climate heat pumps are designed to continue heating when outdoor temperatures fall below freezing. Performance varies by model, so equipment should be selected using its published heating capacity at local winter temperatures instead of its advertised maximum output.


Some homes use a heat pump as the main heating system with electric backup. Others pair a heat pump with an existing or new furnace. The right arrangement depends on the home, electrical capacity, ductwork, comfort goals and budget.


Does a heat pump also provide air conditioning?


Yes. A heat pump moves heat in both directions. During winter it transfers heat into the home. During summer it reverses operation and removes heat from the home, providing cooling much like a central air conditioner.


This can make a heat pump a practical option for homeowners who want to improve both heating and summer cooling with one system.


Why does proper sizing matter?


A heat pump should be selected using the heating and cooling needs of the building. Bigger is not automatically better.


An oversized system may turn on and off too frequently, create uneven temperatures and reduce moisture control during summer. An undersized system may rely too heavily on backup heat or struggle during extreme weather.


A proper assessment considers the size and layout of the home, insulation, windows, air leakage, ductwork, airflow, local winter temperatures, existing equipment, electrical capacity and household comfort preferences.


Replacing an old unit with equipment of the same size is not always the correct answer. Buildings change over time, and older equipment may not have been sized properly in the first place.


Can a heat pump use existing ductwork?


Often it can, but the ductwork must be evaluated. Heat pumps commonly move air at different temperatures and airflow rates than older furnaces. Restricted returns, undersized ducts, dirty components or poor balancing can affect comfort and efficiency.


A ducted heat pump installation should include an airflow review instead of assuming the existing system is suitable.


Homes without ductwork may be candidates for ductless heat pumps. These systems use one or more indoor units connected to an outdoor unit and can provide targeted heating and cooling without installing a full duct system.


Will a heat pump lower energy costs?


It may, but savings depend on what the heat pump replaces, energy prices, equipment efficiency, installation quality and how the system is operated.


A homeowner replacing electric resistance heating may see a different result than someone replacing a high efficiency gas furnace. It is better to compare realistic operating scenarios than rely on a general savings claim.

Should a furnace be kept as backup?

Other homes use an electric heat pump with electric backup. Both approaches can work. The decision should consider electrical service, fuel availability, existing equipment, comfort expectations and the heating capacity of the selected heat pump.


What should homeowners ask before choosing a heat pump?


Ask how the required system size was calculated. Ask about heating capacity at local winter temperatures, ductwork and airflow, backup heat, electrical requirements, warranties, equipment registration and maintenance.


Clear answers make it easier to compare proposals based on system design and long term value instead of equipment price alone.
